The drinking water in Bangladesh is heavily polluted. It is not unusual for measurements of several milligrams of arsenic per liter to be recorded. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that water should contain no more than 10 micrograms (1 microgram equals 1/1,000 milligrams).
LANXESS is helping to solve the problem – with mobile filter systems for domestic use. The central water supply does not even provide enough water for the cities. Around 13 million people live in the capital city of Dhaka alone – almost half in slums. And in the countryside, where the arsenic pollution is highest, they do not even have water pipes.
Uncomplicated help on location
LANXESS joined forces with students from the University of Cottbus, Germany, in 2006 to start a water purification project in Bangladesh in a village south of Dhaka. The specially developed filter systems are easy to use, do not require any maintenance, and clean the water quickly and economically.
As part of its social commitment LANXESS supports further projects for improving the drinking water supply, for example in Tanzania and South Africa.
